Auto Accidents

Winter driving can cause unexpected accidents and injury. If you are involved in an accident, it is important to:

  1. stay calm
  2. pull over to the shoulder or another area to prevent further damage if you can do so safely

Always ask someone to call the police and seek medical assistance if necessary. Whether you are in a single car or multiple car accident, the law requires that you immediately contact the police or go to the nearest police agency to make an accident report. You should never leave the scene of even a minor accident, as you could expose yourself to civil or criminal liability. When you are involved in an accident, obtain the names of all witnesses, including addresses and telephone numbers. Obtain complete information from all those involved, whenever possible. Always make a complete report on the scene, not at a later date. Following these suggestions will not only assist you if you have been injured in a traffic accident, but also will protect you from criminal and/or civil liability. Even a single car accident can expose you to criminal liability that can result in fines, costs, probation and jail time. In addition to penalties that the court may assess, the Secretary of State adds points to your license. The Secretary of State can restrict or suspend your license and can impose a driver responsibility fee. Treat every accident seriously to avoid the potential for civil and/or criminal responsibility. Contact our office if you have been involved in a traffic accident and you will receive a 30 minute consultation and no charge to assess your case.
